Common Symptoms Related to a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

A traumatic brain injury is generally the result of a jolt or violent blow to the head. These types of injuries are commonly experienced in severe car accidents. While a mild TBI may only result in temporary dysfunction of the brain cells, more serious injuries could result in permanent damage or even death. Some of the common symptoms related to a traumatic brain injury are discussed below.

Mild to Moderate Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms

There are a variety of symptoms related to a mild to moderate traumatic brain injury. It is important to note that while some of these symptoms may show up immediately after the accident, others may take days or weeks to appear.

  • Headache
  • Vomiting or nausea
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Sensory problems
  • Concentration or memory problems
  • Vertigo
  • Dizziness
  • Sound or light sensitivity
  • Mood swings or changes in mood
  • Drowsiness and fatigue

Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms

Symptoms of severe TBI can mimic those of a mild or moderate injury, and the following additional symptoms may also appear:

  • Profound concussion
  • Slurred speech
  • Loss of consciousness for minutes or hours
  • Coordination loss
  • Numbness or weakness
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Headache that worsens or is persistent
  • Pupil dilation

Traumatic Brain Injury Symptoms in Children

Children and infants that experience a brain injury may not have the communication skills needed to report confusion, sensory problems, headaches, or other symptoms. If your child has experienced a traumatic brain injury, some of the symptoms you may observe include:

  • Change in sleeping habits
  • Depressed or sad mood
  • Inability to focus or pay attention
  • Irritability
  • Persistent crying
  • Change in nursing or eating habits

When You Should Call a Doctor

If your child was injured to the head, seek medical attention immediately, especially if the accident has resulted in behavioral changes. If any symptoms or signs of a TBI occur after an injury or accident involving the head, you should also seek medical care.
